A Guide To Common Types Of Asphalt

If you have ever heard of someone laying asphalt and now you need to do so, you may be surprised to learn that there are a variety of options to choose from. For instance, you may have noticed that some asphalt is cold when it is being laid down, while another driveway might be hot to the touch for hours after being installed. The type of asphalt being provided will dramatically impact the way it will be applied. Therefore, it is a good idea to have a clear understanding of the unique benefits each type of asphalt provides and the following information will be very helpful.

#1-Pouring Cold Mix Asphalt

Cold mix is undoubtedly the easiest asphalt to pour because it can be poured when it is at or near the current temperature outside. That is useful since there is a reduced risk of accidental burns and the asphalt can simply be poured, smoothed, and left to dry for quick use.

Unfortunately, the final product is not able to survive the damage associated with constant use of heavy equipment. As a result, it is better to use cold mix asphalt to make a new driveway or to patch holes in roads that are not used extensively.

#2-Choosing Hot Mix

Hot mix asphalt will be heated and then dried before pouring. If it is allowed to cool before it is poured, the structural integrity and future use of the asphalt could be compromised, so it is necessary in some places to only provide new hot mix asphalt during the hottest summer months. It is made with an aggregate that binds closely with the asphalt to form a stronger, thicker substance.

Due to the improved strength and resistance to damage that hot mix asphalt provides, it is a good choice for areas that undergo regular and heavy use, such as highways. While it could be used for busy parking lots, doing so would be more expensive and time-consuming than necessary. It is poured while hot over a heated and smoothed bed of gravel.

#3-Benefiting From Porous Asphalt

Porous asphalt is unique because it was created primarily to meet a specific need. Because its porous nature provides the opportunity for storm water to run off the surface, it is an ideal choice for areas that are at particular risk of flooding.

It is a good choice for parking lots, since its ability to defer water could make parking after or during a severe thunderstorm easier. It also is strong and can withstand years of use from both vehicles and pedestrians.

In conclusion, the use of new asphalt is a big decision and doing so will require an understanding of the different types of asphalt that you can choose from. As a result, it will be very helpful to be aware of the information above in order to make the most appropriate choice.
